Madison Arts Exchange

About Us

MAD Arts is a colorful explosion of talent with one-of-a-kind hand crafted items made by artisans primarily from Madison County, VA. In addition to the fine arts and craft offerings, there are select discounted art supplies, stationery, local music and authors, and an eclectic selection of new books (always discounted) for adults and children. It’s like a Pinterest store!

Books

MAD Arts has a robust selection of both fine and applied art instruction books. In addition, there are books for music lovers, books on pop-culture, gardening, cookbooks, local history, and reference. MAD Arts has books for pre-schoolers, young readers, young adults, teens, adults and adults who act like kids. You probably won’t find a New York Time’s bestseller, but you will find something you just can’t live without!

Our History

Madison Arts Exchange opened in August 2009 in the historic center of Madison County, Virginia. The tiny store featured 12 local artists.  Hand-made, one of a kind items spilled out from the small space.  In November 2011 the store relocated to Route 29 in Rochelle, VA and was reborn as MAD Arts. Over the past six years, the shop has grown to more than 200 local artisans of all skill levels, primarily living or working in Madison County.

Madison County is home to many nationally recognized artists such as Lou Messa and Richard Young.  Krissy Lavin teaches adult fine arts classes and has taught hundreds of people to draw and paint. Barbara Hawley, the Queen of Fun, can be found creating fairy houses or making tie-dye creations out back near Carter Jahn’s outdoor sculpture garden.

The eclectic mix of items always has first time visitors wide-eyed. Enjoy barn-wood picture frames made by Richard Clatterbuck.  You’ll also find alpaca yarns and shawls, sheepskin rugs, felted animals, pottery, turned wooden bowls, carved soapstone and wood, soaps, lotions and jewelry.

Creative Solutionist Janine Jensen is the owner and director of MAD Arts. Her vision is to provide a venue for the locals to showcase their passions while offering a destination shopping and activity center for visitors to the Blue Ridge.
